NFL Camp News Plus College Season Win Bets
NFL CAMP NEWS/NOTES
PLUS BASEBALL'S THREE BIGGEST NAMES THAT WON'T BE TRADED AT THE JULY 31ST DEADLINE ...
HERE'S SOME COLLEGE FOOTBALL OVER/UNDER WINS TOTALS FOR 2017
Okay, so not all news coming out of the NFL Training Camps is good - just ask now-former Dallas Cowboys return specialist Lucky Whitehead who was handed his "release" after he was initially (and mistakenly) charged with misdemeanor petty larceny in his home state of Virginia.
Never a dull moment with the Cowboys, even in late July!
Now, let's get to a few more NFL camps set to open here on this Thursday/Friday:
KANSAS CITY - at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph (MO)
Lots of folks already hitting the PUP list for the KC Chiefs but - for now - do-everything TE Travis Kelce is not heading there as he is going through drills despite off-season shoulder surgery. Kelce missed all of his team's OTA's in the spring-time and it was expected he would be eased back into practices but the Chiefs gave a "thumbs up" to the start of his on-field sessions. Remember last year Kelce caught a team-high 85 balls (he was targeted 117 times in all).
NEW YORK GIANTS - at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford (NJ)
There's a whole lot of chatter regarding the Giants and all their so-called playmakers but one guy getting special attention paid him this training camp is second-year RB Paul Perkins who rushed for 102 yards on 21 carries in a Week 17 win in Washington. One web site story referred to Perkins as the "best-kept secret" on the Giants this year but, trust us, nobody's gonna be sleeping on this former UCLA star who played in less than 28 percent of the team's offensive snaps a year ago and wound up rushing for 456 yards (a 4.1 ypc average).
TAMPA BAY - at One Buccaneer Place in Tampa (FL)
Do the here-and-now Bucs have one of the best receiving corps in all of football? Well, that depends on whether you believe rookie TE O.J. Howard (Alabama) is gonna be a stud right from the get-go to go along with WR Mike Evans (12 TDs a year ago and one hellacious fantasy league player), new WR DeSean Jackson and still-unsung TE Cameron Brate who nabbed 57 receptions and scored 8 TDs last year. Brate and/or Howard will shift out wide plenty for this Tampa Bay team so that both can be on the field at the same time and let us be the first to say that WR Adam Humphries (55 catches for 622 yards a year ago) could be a real gem when dealing with single coverage.

THE BASEBALL UPDATE
Okay, so here's five "names" that won't be traded (and why not) prior to next week's MLB Trade Deadline:
JACOB de GROM, RHP, New York Mets - Don't know why this deGrom-to-Houston rumor began to have legs last week, 'cause Mets' GM Sandy Alderson was never gonna deal away a guy now riding a personal eight-game winning streak. Following the Monday night win in San Diego, deGrom is now 12-3 and chiseling out his fair share of Cy Young votes.
WILL MEYERS, 1B, San Diego - There's been major stirring that the Padres will make this a complete fire sale after dealing away three pitchers to Kansas City this past Monday, but don't expect his power-hitting star to depart the SoCal scene anytime soon. Myers has 20 dingers for a Padres team ranked 30th in the bigs in offense. Not going anywhere after having been traded twice before (from Kansas City and Tampa Bay).
ROBERTO OSUNA, RHP, Toronto - Even if the hugely disappointing Blue Jays (46-54) don't make any sort of run at a wild card spot this year, they're not dealing off this stellar closer who earned his 25th save of the season this past Monday night against the Oakland A's and then copped save #26 in Tuesday's 4-1 win versus the A's. Osuna has 19 Ks and only 1 BB in his last 11 outings but word that he could be headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers or Houston Astros should have been scuttled by now.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL OVER/UNDER WINS
Folks, lots of College Football coverage in these Jim Sez pages from here on out - we'll resume with more Conference-by-Conference quick-hitter comments in tomorrow's column space - but let's start a series of segments regarding the over/under regular-season wins totals for a slew of NCAA Football teams (and remember all prices below are based on $100 per-play wagers). Today, it's ...
ALABAMA ... 10.5 over -210
Gotta lay better than 2-to-1 price here just to have the 'Bama Crimson Tide win more than 10 of its 12 regular-season affairs and keep in mind Nick Saban's crew has road trips to Texas A&M, Miss State and archrival Auburn along with that season-opening Sept. 2nd tilt against Florida State (that's in the Georgia Dome). If QB Jalen Hurts can scare folks with his arm - he already has 'em shaking because of his legs - than we could well see an unbeaten Tide team roar into this year's College Football Playoffs. Looking like an "over" to us.
COLORADO ... 7 under -145
Last year's Buffaloes won 10 games, played in a bowl game for the first time since 2007 and even banged out a 10-4 ATS (against the spread) mark but this year's crew must replace eight defensive starters and some key parts on offense including 2016 QB Sefo Liufau. Here's a vote that says the Buffaloes win eight-or-more games even with the shuffled personnel.
IOWA ... 6.5 over - 130
Strange to see such a low wins total for the Hawkeyes who have made it to a bowl game in eight of the last nine seasons. This Big 10 team is considered one of the favorites to cop the Big 10 West Division but note new offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz - the son of head coach Kirk Ferentz - must make sure they get the ball in the hands of RB Akrum Wadley who had a 167 total yards against Michigan last year. Tough call here but "stealing" a game at either Northwestern or Nebraska could get the 'Eyes over the top.
