BASEBALL'S "UNDER-THE-RADAR" TEAMS WHILE HEADING INTO MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Here's something you might well have been wondering following Sunday night's uber-dramatic 111-108 last-second win by the Boston Celtics over the Cleveland Cavaliers ... was there even a "money line" made available to the wagering folks of the world?
Well, according to our sources, three Las Vegas locations had the Celtics anywhere from + 1680 to + 1800 for that Game 3 clash and if you know anyone that played Boston at any of the money line prices, well, rub up against 'em for extra good luck!
In a week where NBA Conference Finals were about as exciting as watching paint dry, there came the East's #1 seed digging out from behind a 21-point deficit midway through the third quarter - and without injured mega-star G Isaiah Thomas (hip/out for playoffs) to boot - to bang out a super-thrilling Game 3 win against 16.5-point favorite Cleveland and suddenly this particular playoff round has a pulse.
Hip, hip, hooray!
Okay, so the Cavaliers already have been installed as 15-point betting favs for Tuesday's Game 4 at "The Quick" but once Celtics' G Avery Bradley watched his uncontested three-point shot bounce around the rim before dropping through the twine with 0.1 seconds left, you could feel a sense of energy zip through the hoop veins of the guys dressed in green-and-white.
A quick-hitter Game 4 preview of Celtics-Cavaliers follows this reminder and a look at tonight's potential series-clincher Game 4 out West between the Golden State Warriors and the short-handed San Antonio Spurs:

Tonight, it's ...
WESTERN CONFERENCE: GOLDEN STATE at SAN ANTONIO - Warriors lead series 3-0; Game 4 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN
Maybe this whole series would have been different had the SA Spurs held on to win Game 1 - yes, a major meltdown for Gregg Popovich's crew back on May 14th and they've never recovered from that game or the Game 1 ankle re-injury to superstar Kawhi Leonard.
C'est la vie!
The fact of the matter is Golden State - as Popovich has pointed out - has "four All Stars" on the floor just about every time you look up and who knew Javale McGee would pump home 16 points (11 of 'em in the first quarter) in last Saturday's 120-108 win/cover and be a star himself.
Now, Kevin Durant (game-high 33 points in Game 3) and mates look to go fo', fo', fo' in these first three playoff series and the Spurs are more short-handed than usual with Leonard declared out here and ditto for reserve F/C David Lee and, of course, Tony Parker.
See 'ya next year, Spurs!
Note all home teams are in CAPS below:
|5-14||GOLDEN ST||- 10||San Antonio||113-111|
|5-16||GOLDEN ST||- 13.5||San Antonio||136-100|
|5-20||Golden St||- 9.5||SAN ANT||120-108|
On Tuesday, it's ...
EASTERN CONFERENCE: BOSTON at CLEVELAND - Cavaliers lead series 2-1; Game 4 is 8:30 p.m. on TNT
Sorry, but we're not hearing any of that bunk that says the Celtics are "better off" without the oft-ball hogging Thomas: One reason why the C's did pull out the stunner in Game 3 is because ball movement was improved but G Marcus Smart (27 points including 7 made trifectas) made everyone look better by draining big shot after big shot and it was no secret that Cleveland's LeBron James was asleep at the wheel with 11 points and 6 turnovers. Afterwards, the TNT cast kept saying James was "not engaged" but maybe even The King was bored with the series-opening wins by 13 and 44 points - but you better believe James will be the ultimate stat-sheet stuffer here on Tuesday night yet whether the Cavs cover this two-TD plus price tag might well come down to whether or not Cleveland's other guys are draining threes - the whole Cav team shot a putrid 2-of-17 from downtown in the second half the other night and it was dang ugly!
THE BASEBALL REPORT
We're days away from the unofficial start of summer with Memorial Day Weekend straight ahead and here's our little "under the radar" team in each league as we go full steam ahead:
In the National League ...
PITTSBURGH (20-24) - Most in the-know folks already have written the Pirates' obit but not so fast my friends! Pittsburgh is just 5 games back of the lead in the jumbled (and mediocre) NL Central and OF Andrew McCutchen and friends have barely heated up. Don't be shocked if a month from now the Pirates are a handful of games above the .500 mark and eyeballing the top of the NL Central.
In the American League ...
KANSAS CITY (18-25) - The Royals are a league-worst minus 45 in the runs differential department because this KC club simply has not hit but the weather's gonna heat up and we fully expect veterans Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon to heat up - we don't think management will deal away any of these guys anytime soon - plus expect the bullpen to get shored up (see seven blown saves already).
