THE BASEBALL REPORT: CHECKIN' OUT THE 10 GAMES-OVER-.500 SQUADS
Hey, let's hurry this thing up ... after all, the defending NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers are waiting for the winner of this now seven-game series between the Washington Wizards versus the Boston Celtics and we remind y'all that the Cavs have played just eight games in the past 30 calendar days!
First things first and that's tonight Game 7 in Beantown where the Celtics have won/covered all three games played in this series on their home floor even though they fell behind by 16 points in Game 1 and were forced to go overtime in Game 2 (yes, it does seem like that all happened weeks ago).
On this Monday night, it's ...WASHINGTON at BOSTON - Series tied 3-3; Game 7 at 8 p.m. ET on TNT
No use cryin' over spilt milk as reports circulated that the Celtics were "cheated" a second or two late in Friday's painful 92-91 loss-but-cover in D.C. Still, fact of matter is Boston's long-armed defender Avery Bradley never should have given Wizards PG John Wall any sort of opening while looking to square his body for the game-winning three-point bucket and that's a major key here as the C's must not allow Wall to be a threat from both downtown and on his lightning-quick drives to the hoop.
On the flip side, Boston head coach Brad Stevens - one of the league's top three or four game strategists - needs to free up lefty PG Isaiah Thomas (27 points but on 8-of-24 FG attempts in Game 6) for more perimeter jumpers plus in-the-paint folks Al Horford and reserve Kelly Olynyk must make the Wizards pay for not playing great in-deep defense.
Hey, we said last time and we were "half-right" and that the Wizards ain't gonna win if Wall (26 points in Game 6) and backcourt buddy Bradley Beal (33 points in Game 6) are forced to score approximately 50 percent of their team's points (they won but didn't cover Game 6) ... maybe Washington F Otto Porter (zero points in 35 minutes this past Friday night) can show up for this road fandango!
Note all home teams are in CAPS below:
|5-2||BOSTON||- 5||Washington||129-119 (ot)|

On Tuesday, it's ...SAN ANTONIO at GOLDEN STATE - Warriors lead series 1-0; Game 2 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN
The post-script on Game 1 had to do with the third-quarter re-injured ankle of Spurs' star Kawhi Leonard and how the Warriors darted to an 18-0 scoring spree right after Leonard went down and out.
However, the reality of the situation is Game 1 was imminently "winnable" for Gregg Popovich's 10-point road dogs - even after the Leonard injury - and gotta believe San Antonio's going to rue this series-opening loss from here until this best-of-seven set is put in the books.
What can San Ant now do here in Game 2 - especially if Leonard (26 points in 23 minutes) is a no-go?
For starters, the Spurs must do something about getting out on three-point shooters Stephen Curry (40 points/7-of-16 made triples) and Kevin Durant (34 points/2-of-8 made trifectas) - yes, easier said than done but San Antonio simply can't let this duo along with Klay Thompson (just three triple tries in Game 1) attempt a whopping 27 shots from beyond the arc.
Look for Golden State - down by as many as 25 points in Sunday's opener - to rev it up right at the start here as acting coach Mike Brown must light a fire from the get-go, so if San Antonio's within shouting distance by the halftime break, than maybe it can make up for blowing Game 1.
|5-14||GOLDEN ST||- 10||San Antonio||113-111|
Now, let's get you the NBA Playoffs Pointspread Breakdown chart with all 16 teams that have participated in this year's post-season (thru the games of Sunday, May 14):
THE BASEBALL REPORT
Here's some insight/comments on MLB's 10+-over-.500 teams as we hit the midway point of the month of May:
AMERICAN LEAGUE: HOUSTON (26-12) - The Astros exited Sunday's twin-bill in The Bronx with a plus 43 in the runs differential category but it's the pitching more than the hitting that's buoyed this bunch: Houston leads the AL in team ERA (3.29) with six-game winner LHP Dallas Keuchel heading up a better-than-you-think staff. P.S., paging an early-season MVP candidate in LF Marwin Gonzalez (9 HR and 23 RBI).
NATIONAL LEAGUE: WASHINGTON (24-13) - One thing you can say about these here-and-now Nationals is that they don't have an "automatic out" in their lineup: Note that the NL East leaders rank first in team batting average, first in runs scored and second in home runs and, truth be told, 3B Anthony Rendon really has had just one big game (see 10 RBI versus the New York Mets a couple of weekends ago) and SS Trea Turner (big home run in Saturday's comeback win against Philadelphia and another dinger on Sunday) has yet to hit his stride. Yikes!
