Super Bowl Notes Plus Tonight’s Key College B-ball

MORE SUPER BOWL LI NEWS/NOTES
COLLEGE ROUNDBALL THURSDAY NITE MENU

Okay, so we’ve “asked around” and the feeling right now is that this Super Bowl LI betting line - the New England Patriots are favored by 3 points over the Atlanta Falcons - isn’t likely to move though we did talk to one fellow in the business who claims his office planned at putting up the line as New England -2½ and minus 130. Hmm.

In any event, not very likely that this price tag will budge and we did want to point out the fact that there have been seven previous Super Bowl games in which the pointspread was 3 points - and note the 3-point betting favorites are 3-4 ATS (against the spread) in Super Bowl history with the most recent SB game that sported a 3-point price being the one that ended the 2010 season when 3-point fav Green Bay bested Pittsburgh 31-25.

The totals price for Super Bowl LI opened at 57½ points and immediately shot up to 59 points - maybe it’ll move a point one way or the other but it should stay where it’s at then you’ll have the highest over/under price in SB history (New Orleans vs. Indianapolis in SB XLIV was 57 points).

Meanwhile, there’s a million different ways to “attack” this game from a handicapping standpoint and one thing we like to look at (among many others) is how these teams fared this 2016 season when playing folks from the opposite conference. We’ll do that in a second but first this key reminder …

COLLEGE STYLE MISMATCH OF THE WEEK!
It’s not just how good they are - but how they match up! This one’s a cinch!
Jim Hurley has spoken with his scouts and confirmed it with his software: there’s one game on tonight’s college basketball schedule that WILL BE LIKE AN UNCONTESTED LAY-UP! Team A has a great inside game. Team B has the outside shooters. Who wins? Cash my answer big time! Only $15

Now, here’s what we can tell you about the New England Patriots vs. NFC teams first (home teams in CAPS below):

NEW ENGLAND vs. NFC TEAMS

WINNERSPREADLOSERSCORE
New England+8ARIZONA23-21
Seattle+7½NEW ENGLAND31-24
New England-11SAN FRAN30-17
NEW ENGLAND-13Los Angeles26-10

So, the Pats covered 3-of-4 matchups with NFC West teams this year and notched spread wins in both of the road games.

Now, here’s what we can tell you about the Atlanta Falcons vs. AFC teams (again, home teams in CAPS below):

ATLANTA vs. AFC TEAMS

WINNERSPREADLOSERSCORE
Atlanta+4OAKLAND35-28
Atlanta+4DENVER23-16
San Diego+4½ATLANTA33-30 (ot)
Kansas City+5ATLANTA29-28

Interesting … the Falcons won outright as underdogs in both road games against AFC West competition and yet lost the “whole game” at home to the Chargers and Chiefs. So, maybe playing another AFC team outside the Georgia Dome will be a good thing!

THE COLLEGE HOOPS REPORT

Let’s face it … not likely the rest of this season that we’re gonna have a night like we did this past Tuesday when the country’s #1, #2 and #4 teams all lost (see Villanova, Kansas and Kentucky) - hey, that had not happened since 1979! Still, there’s compelling hoops action on this Thursday sked, so check out these couple of games:

VIRGINIA TECH (15-4, 4-3) at #9 NORTH CAROLINA (18-3, 6-1) - 8 p.m. ET, ESPN
No doubt there’s gonna be lots of hootin’ and hollerin’ at year’s end should the Atlantic Coast Conference get as many as nine (or maybe even 10) teams into this year’s NCAA Tournament field but it’s a lock both of these clubs will be dancin’ - but can the V-Tech Hokies stop this Carolina six-game winning streak that’s included triumphs over Florida State and N.C. State. We’ll be curious to see if UNC forward Kennedy Meeks (20 points, 9 rebounds in last Saturday’s 90-82 non-cover win at 18½-point pup Boston College) will have clear sailing under the hoop against a Hokies bunch that ranks a dismal 11th in the ACC in defense.

#10 OREGON (18-2, 7-0) at UTAH (14-5, 5-2) -10:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1
It’s somewhat ironic that both Arizona (home to Washington State) and Oregon enter tonight’s games with perfect 7-and-oh records inside the Pac-12 and yet it’s the eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins that seem to hog up all the national attention … right? In any event, Oregon is the “real deal” even with a banged-up Dillon Brooks (sprained left foot) who is said to be a game-time decision for this bash in Salt Lake City. P.S., the Oregon Ducks are 5-0 SU (straight-up) against the Utes the past two seasons.
