Patriots Dominate Texans 27-0 To Get NFL Week 3 Off-And-Rollin
Plus Broncos-Bengals, Jets-Chiefs Previews … More College Football Previews Too, Including #19 Florida At #14 Tennessee
Who needs Tom Brady … or even Jimmy Garoppolo, for that matter!
Folks, we told you in the other day’s Jim Sez column that nobody should be feeling sorry for the New England Patriots just ‘cause they were down to a third-string/rookie quarterback and what do you know:
The Pats’ new-kid-on-the-block QB Jacoby Brissett (103 yards passing, 48 yards rushing including a nifty 27-yard TD scamper) dusted off the Houston Texans to the tune of 27-0 to go 3-and-oh SU (straight-up) and 3-0 ATS (against the spread) without the aforementioned Mr. Brady.
Hmm, think they should be penciling in a tentative amphibious parade date for early February along the Charles River?
Sure, maybe Brissett was “along for the ride” last night but the kid showed poise and that still-underrated New England defense did the rest while making new Texans’ QB Brock Osweiler appear a mere novice.
Say it with us: Houston, you have a problem!
In Sunday’s NFL Week 3 games, it’s …
DENVER (2-0) at CINCINNATI (1-1) – 1 p.m. ET, CBS
The defending Super Bowl champion Broncos have SB MVP Von Miller … and you don’t! Still, Miller – the best pure pass-rushing OLB since Lawrence Taylor (see 1980s, you kiddies out there) – no doubt will be coming off the edge here to get in QB Andy Dalton’s face and so a big key is having Cincy go opposite Miller and that means lots of screens to RB Gio Bernard. P.S., where was Cincinnati WR A.J. Green last weekend against Pittsburgh (see two receptions for 38 yards)?
Spread Note – The Broncos are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games dating back to last season.
NEW YORK JETS (1-1) at KANSAS CITY (1-1) – 4:25 p.m. ET, CBS
The Las Vegas number appears “short” here even if KayCee RB Jamaal Charles doesn’t play – we’re hearing his is a game-time decision – but did you notice that new Jets’ RB Matt Forte was an absolute stat-sheet stuffer in last week’s 37-31 prime-time win in Buffalo with 100 yards rushing and three scores. If the Jets feed ‘em 30-plus touches here, they win again!
Spread Note – The Chiefs have not started off a season 0-3 ATS since 2009 and did you know the J-E-T-S have covered their last five consecutive games when in the underdog role?
Jim Hurley and his veteran Handicappers and Bloggers will storm their way to the winner’s circle this week/weekend with NFL Week 3 and NCAA Football action with the pro menu rolling on with a slew of big Sunday games including the night-time tilt between the Chicago Bears at the Dallas Cowboys.
Plus, the college kids have a jam-packed weekend ahead including Friday night action here featuring USC at #24 Utah (9 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1) plus a great Saturday with Florida-Tennessee and Wisconsin-Michigan State headlining the play.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEWS
On Saturday, it’s …
#12 GEORGIA (3-0, 1-0 SEC) at #23 OLE MISS (1-2, 0-1 SEC) – 12 p.m. ET, ESPN
Hard to believe that the Ole Miss Rebels have a whole season in front of ‘em following painful early-season losses to Florida State and Alabama … now head coach Hugh Freeze must summon his team’s inner strengths to cover this 7.5-point price tag and the numero uno key is stopping Dawgs TB Nick Chubb who charged out to a 222-yard rushing game against North Carolina on opening weekend but he’s rushed for only 143 yards in two games since.
Spread Note – Ole Miss is 10-6-1 ATS in Southeastern Conference games the past two-plus seasons.
#19 FLORIDA (3-0, 1-0 SEC) at #14 TENNESSEE (3-0, 0-0 SEC) – 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS
Okay, Vols fans, we know you don’t want to hear it again but the Florida Gators have won the past 11 matchups SU and now they zoom into Rocky Top a dangerous 6.5-point pup here. Sure, Florida QB Luke Del Rio (knee) is a no-go here after throwing for 762 yards and 6 TDs in his first two-plus games but Tennessee has some defensive injuries too including CB Cameron Sutton (broken ankle). Note that the Gators won each of the last two games versus Tennessee by a single point – that was 28-27 last year and 10-9 the year before.
Spread Note – Florida’s 5-2-2 versus the vig in its last nine head-to-head showdowns against Tennessee and overall the Gators are 9-2-1 ATS away since the start of 2014.
#9 WASHINGTON (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12) at ARIZONA (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12) – 10:30 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network
Let’s dole out some “love” to the left coast where sneaky-good Washington may be making its way to the four-team College Football Playoff party at season’s end – yes, we know there’s remaining road games against Oregon, Utah, Cal and Wazzu but you never know! Washington QB Jake Browning leads the country in passing efficiency with a 206.9 rating but we’re still awaiting word on whether Arizona QB Anu Solomon (knee) gets the green light here. We expect Brandon Dawkins to start at QB for the ‘Cats for a third straight game.
Spread Note – Washington has covered its last three in a row against ‘Zona and the UW Huskies are 10-5 ATS away since late 2013.
