The Jim Sez Midweek Report
OUR JIM SEZ MID-WEEK UPDATE GETS THE NFL WEEK 2 JUMP-STARTED WITH THURSDAY'S JETS-BILLS BASH PLUS NEWS/NOTES FROM THE MNF ACTION
PLUS IS THIS THE WEEKEND COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S TOP 25 UNDERDOGS BARK UP A STORM?
Take a quickie peek at the NFL Week 2 card and you'll see there are three games pitting teams that lost their Week 1 games … and one of those matchups is Thursday's New York Jets at Buffalo Bills clash in western upstate New York (the others are Dallas at Washington and Jacksonville at San Diego).
Yes, the wolves are out to get second-year Bills head coach Rex Ryan ... folks, we're not a fan of his but how can everyone keep saying he's already on the "hot seat" ... plus anyone who's checked out the early portion of the 2016 Jets' schedule knows it's a doozy, so you might say this Thursday's prime-time game is a "must-win" for Todd Bowles' bunch.
We'll get to the Jets-Bills preview in a sec but first a quickie note that NFL Week 1 Betting Favorites registered a 6-8 ATS (against the spread) mark with two Pick 'Ems tossed into the mix while totals players are aware that "Overs" are 9-7 versus the vig through a week's worth of action ... just thought you might like to know!
On Thursday Nite, it's …
NEW YORK JETS (0-1) at BUFFALO (0-1) ... 8:25 p.m. ET, CBS
It didn't take long for this Las Vegas pointspread to go from Bills minus 2.5 points to pick 'em once word leaked out that Buffalo WR Sammy Watkins (foot) missed Monday's practice plus LT Cordy Glenn (ankle) also appears iffy for this key AFC East battle ... remember the Bills swept the season series from the J-E-T-S last year including a Week 17 tilt that kayoed NYJ from the playoff chase and our insiders claim the Jets have been stewing over that end-of-season loss for months. Key component here is whether or not the Jets can get their dynamic duo of WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker into the swing of things here after they combined for only five receptions worth just 59 yards in last Sunday's bitter and mistake-filled 23-22 home loss to Cincinnati.
Spread Notes ... The Jets actually have failed to cover their last five consecutive head-to-head games against Buffalo while note the Bills are a solid 15-10 spreadwise as hosts since late in the 2012 season.
In other NFL News/Notes …
Get the feeling the whole D.C. area is scared silly that Washington Redskins' QB Kirk Cousins might indeed have been that proverbial "one-year wonder" as his sickly showing in Monday's 38-16 loss to 2.5-point fav Pittsburgh has 'Skin fans in a panicky state.
No question the O-line played poorly in front of Cousins but his accuracy was a problem and sure looked like head coach Jay Gruden was wondering what Cousins was looking at when he threw his two picks.
Meanwhile, on the left coast the nightcap of MNF action saw San Francisco punish the Los Angeles Rams 28-0 and has any quarterback ever looked worse than LA's Case Keenum (see 17-of-35 passing for 130 yards with two INTs)?
Shame on Rams' head coach Jeff Fisher for not having his team prepared for that Week 1 affair ... enough with the excuses about the team "settling in" to their new LA digs and such ... and if anyone deserved to be fired after one game it's brand-new Rams offensive coordinator Rob Boras who came across as a real jerk in the HBO Hard Knocks series this summer. And to think one-time Rams head coach and USC legendary boss John Robinson actually pushed for Boras' hiring? Geez!
Jim Hurley and his Handicappers and Bloggers are all revved up for a monster showing this week/weekend as we start off NFL Week 2 play with the aforementioned battle between the New York Jets at the Buffalo Bills plus there's a great Week 2 Sunday card too including Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Indianapolis at Denver and the Sunday Night game between rivals Green Bay at Minnesota.
The college kids are back on the gridiron come Thursday night too as #6 Houston plays at Cincinnati (we'll preview that game in the next Jim Sez) and this Saturday's card is chock full of big games that we'll list below Get Baseball too as it heads down the final couple of weeks in this 2016 season ... for all the winners just check with us right here online or via our toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453 on game-day mornings or afternoon.
THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT
Once upon a time there was a College Football handicapping theory that went like this: Don't ask questions, just wager on Top 25 teams that are taking points.
Well, not sure if you subscribe to that particular theory but if you do ... and admittedly we do at times ... than this could be a busy Saturday 'cause #10 Louisville, #12 Michigan State, #14 Oklahoma, #17 Texas A&M, #19 Ole Miss and #22 Oregon all are in the underdog role against high-profile opponents, so let's give you some pointspread backgrounds:
#10 Louisville ... The Cardinals are 2.5-point home pups versus #2 Florida State and note the 'Ville is 19-10 ATS as dogs since the start of 2011.
#12 Michigan State ... It's prime-time for Sparty at 8-point favorite #18 Notre Dame and M-State is an electric 13-4-1 spreadwise as point-grabbers since the start of 2011.
#14 Oklahoma ... It's a rare day/night when Boomer Sooners are home dogs but that's the deal-e-oh here as #3 Ohio State is a 2-point favorite in Norman. It's been more than a decade since Oklahoma was a home dog but these Big 12 guys are a respectable 7-5-1 ATS in that role the past 10 years.
#17 Texas A&M ... The Aggies are gobbling up 4 points right now for Saturday's game at unranked Auburn and know this: A&M's just 5-12 spreadwise as dogs since the start of the '11 season.
#19 Ole Miss ... How about this factoid: The Rebels are 10-point home dogs for this Saturday's brouhaha versus #1 Alabama even though Ole Miss has beaten the Tide the past two years in a row. Now go scream at someone, Nick Saban!
#22 Oregon ... Fancy this: The Ducks are a 3-point dog at unranked Nebraska even though this Pac-12 team went a perfect 4-and-oh vig-wise as puppy dogs a year ago (covers against Michigan State, Washington, Arizona State and Stanford).
