Jim Sez Friday NFL and Opening College Previews
IT'S A BUSY FRIDAY EVENING CARD AS NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 ACTION REALLY HEATS UP!
PLUS COLLEGE FOOTBALL 2016 STARTS WITH A CALIFORNIA VS. HAWAII PREVIEW AND WE HAVE A QUICKIE GLANCE AT THE BIG 10 TOO!
Folks, earlier this week we informed you that NFL Betting Favorites were getting crushed so far when it came to this summer's preseason games - the chalk sides entered the Week 3 tilts at a dreadful 10-20-0 ATS (against the spread) with a pair of pick 'em games tossed into the mix - and so now you ask whether that will "correct itself" here in these important "dress rehearsal" games these next few days/nights ... obviously, we're on it here at Jim Hurley's Network where we've been banging out lots of preseason winners including a pair of triumphs so far for the Minnesota Vikings.
Make sure you're piling up the profits this NFL Preseason Week 3 and don't forget the College kids have a game Friday night and then a full menu next week ...
Yes, the NFL Preseason Week 3 card rolls on this Thursday-thru-Sunday with national TV tilts such as Atlanta at Miami, Cleveland at Tampa Bay (Friday on CBS), New York Giants at New York Jets (one of six games on Saturday) and that Sunday tripleheader (a Fox twin-bill beginning at 1 p.m. ET and Cincinnati at Jacksonville at night-time on NBC). As you well know, the College Football 2016 campaign swings into high gear this Friday when California battles Hawaii in Sydney, Australia (10 p.m. ET kickoff) and then there's a full week/weekend card scheduled for Thursday, September 1st and going right through Labor Day.
Folks, you definitely want to be in the winner's circle for all the big opening-week tilts such as #2 Clemson versus Auburn, #5 LSU versus Wisconsin, #3 Oklahoma vs. #15 Houston and #1 Alabama vs. #20 Houston - all of these games are on Sept. 3rd and there's plenty of exciting tilts before and after that key football Saturday. Take note that Jim Hurley -- America's #1 Handicapper - also continues to bang out lots of winners in Major-League Baseball these days and all you need to do to win in the NFL Preseason, NCAA Football and MLB is to check in either right here online or via our toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453 any time after 1 p.m. Eastern time for the weeknight action, after 11 a.m. ET for weekday games and after 10 a.m. ET for Saturday/Sunday/Holiday Winners ... can't beat that, right?
NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3
On Friday, it's ...
NEW ENGLAND (2-0) at CAROLINA (1-1) - 7:30 p.m. ET
No doubt the Patriots have allowed QB Jimmy Garoppolo (16-of-21 passing for 181 yards with one TD last week versus Chicago) to get fully acclimated to the position what with Tom Brady so far not having played a single down this preseason and here the third-year slinger goes against a Panthers' secondary that is playing musical chairs at the corners - remember Josh Norman is now in Washington and Charles "Peanut" Tillman retired - so rookie CBs James Bradberry and Daryl Worley will get tested here.
Current Line: Panthers (- 3.5) and 44.5 points
BUFFALO (1-1) at WASHINGTON (1-1) - 7:30 p.m. ET
Gotta figure the Bills will be anxious to see how WR Sammy Watkins plays here -- he's sat out Buffalo's first two preseason games because of off-season foot surgery - as there's increasing pressure on the AFC East team to control the ball more on offense now that its defense has been walloped with injuries and the like (see DT Marcell Dareus going into rehab before serving his four-game suspension).
Hey, don't get too silly about last week's 21-0 win against the New York Giants when Bills' backup quarterback QB EJ Manuel tossed a pair of touchdown passes - there's zero plans to hurdle him up the depth chart, okay? One quickie note on the 'Skins: Yes, they'll play QB Kirk Cousins here (he sat out last week's 22-18 come-from-behind win/cover against 3-point dog Washington) but all eyes on running back spot now that starter RB Matt Jones (shoulder) will be sitting out the club's final two preseason games.
Current Line: Redskins (- 3) and 43 points
CLEVELAND (0-2) at TAMPA BAY (1-1) - 8 p.m. ET, CBS
Lots of interest in what a couple of wide receivers do here - and, no, we're not talkin' about Browns' bad boy WR Josh Gordon who might indeed be trade bait as we wind our way to the start of regular-season play. It's Cleveland rookie WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) who will be seeing his first game action while on the other side check out Tampa Bay WR Mike Evans who snagged a four-yard scoring strike from QB Jameis Winston in last week's 27-21 win at 3-point fav Jacksonville. Evans finished last week's game with two catches worth 18 yards but it was a slew of drops last year that had first-year head coach Dirk Koetter wondering where his head might be for 2016. Last week Evans was targeted five times - expect that number to increase in this clash.
Current Line: Bucs (- 3.5) and 42.5 points
PITTSBURGH (0-2) at NEW ORLEANS (0-2) - 8 p.m. ET
It's possible that this year's preseason results mean "nothing" to Saints' head coach Sean Payton who has been through this drill before but New Orleans must be concerned with folks on its return teams as Marcus Murphy fumbled for the second game in a row last weekend in that 16-9 loss to Houston. Heck, Payton later said "we'll find another returner" when pressed on the matter and so expect Tommylee Lewis to get his turn bringing back kicks/punts here.
Meanwhile, the Steelers hope to see rookie CB Artie Burns (quad injury) in the lineup here against veteran slinger Drew Brees and Company. Keep in mind that last year Pittsburgh ranked a lowly 29th in pass defense (allowed 272 passing yards per game) and if the coverage is poor downfield here, then head coach Mike Tomlin figures to be "short" in his post-game presser, so watch!
Current Line: Saints (- 2) and 45 points
GREEN BAY (2-0) at SAN FRANCISCO (1-1) - 10 p.m. ET, NFL Network
Late-night action on the tube and the visiting GB Packers claim QB Aaron Rodgers will take a batch of snaps here after completely sitting out the team's preseason wins/covers against Cleveland and Oakland. If Rodgers needs any work here it may be with new center J.C. Tretter who rather unexpectedly beat out Corey Linsley for the top spot. On the flip side, the drama-filled 49ers continue to say Blaine Gabbert will start at quarterback after producing 14 points on six offensive drives this summer but watch for the return of QB Colin Kaepernick who logged full practices earlier this week and appears to be over his case of "dead arm".
Current Line: 49ers (- 2) and 46.5 points
COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S SEASON OPENER IS HERE!
On Friday night, it's ...
CALIFORNIA vs. HAWAII (at Sydney, Australia) - 10 p.m. ET, ESPN
The Cal Golden Bears waved bye-bye to NFL numero uno draft pick QB Jared Goff following that 55-36 blowout over Air Force in last year's Armed Forces Bowl but the "Bear Raid" attack should still have plenty of pop under fourth-year head coach Sonny Dykes and transfer QB Davis Webb who must fend off Hawaii's new "attacking" style defense.
Hey, it's worth a shot considering last year's Rainbow Warriors defense was torched for 40-plus points in three of their final four games of the 2015 campaign. Ouch!
Spread Notes - California is 21-33-1 ATS away since the start of the 2007 campaign while Hawaii enters this bash at 8-15-1 versus the vig overall the past two seasons.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Our Jim Sez conference-by-conference look at this upcoming 2016 season rolls on as we check in on the Big 10:
THE FAVORITE - Ohio State
There are no quarterback controversies 'round Columbus these days as J.T. Barrett is "the man" and there could be as many as a dozen future pros on this squad but the Buckeyes have to be on point to win at Oklahoma and at Michigan State. Did 'ya know head coach Urban Meyer is 50-4 in his four years here? Ohio State could crack the playoff top four with one loss - any more and the answer is no!
THE DARK HORSE - Northwestern
The 'Cats come off a brilliant 10-win season and defense and a rock-ribbed ground game - absolute staples for 11th-year head coach Pat Fitzgerald - figure to be strong in '16 and we could see N'western winning the Big 10 West providing it can win three or four road games (see at Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and Minnesota). If RB Justin Jackson is a bust-loose force, than Northwestern could shine and set up a conference title game against Ohio State with a CFP spot on the line.
COACH OF THE HOT SEAT - Penn State's James Franklin was verbally roasted by pro coaches who blamed him for a major decline in former QB Christian Hackenberg's game and now, following on the heels of back-to-back 7-6 SU (straight-up) seasons in Happy Valley, Franklin must win a minimum of eight games or he's a goner and there's already chatter that Navy's Ken Niumatolo could be the Nittanies' guy.
GAME OF THE YEAR - November 26
MICHIGAN at OHIO STATE ... what else, right? If Jim Harbaugh's Wolverines somehow get here with one (or none) losses than it'll be the Game of the Year on a national basis too.
NOTE: We'll get you more NFL Preseason Week 3 Previews plus more College Football goodies too in the next edition of Jim Sez.
