THE BASEBALL REPORT: IS IT "BUY" OR "SELL" TIME FOR A FEW NAME TEAMS OUT THERE?
COLLEGE FOOTBALL SKED CHECK: HERE'S SOME OPENING-WEEK GOODIES
PLUS OUR FINAL NFL TEAM-BY-TEAM SUMMER LOOK AS WE CHECK OUT THE BRONCOS AND PACKERS
Closing in on the August 1st Major-League Baseball Trade Deadline and there's plenty of rumors going 'round as to what teams with be "buyers" or "sellers". Here's some thoughts:
NEW YORK YANKEES (44-44) - It's been the numero uno topic with this year's Yankees in recent weeks and sure seems as if the front office is split with GM Brian Cashman ready/willing/able to trade some assets for future "stars" while others say the Yanks should hang in there and try to capture a post-season berth this year. Gut feeling is closer LHP Aroldis Chapman will be dealt - Texas and Washington are the most likely destinations - and RF/DH Carlos Beltran could be a goner within the next 15 days too with the San Francisco Giants said to be an interested party.
PITTSBURGH (46-43) - At no point did we ever believe the Pirates were gonna hold a "yard sale" and deal off the likes of uber-popular CF Andrew McCutchen. In fact, now that the Buccos have scooted north of the .500 mark we firmly believe they'll add pieces with the Pittsburgh front office allegedly scouring the rosters of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays for "parts".
LOS ANGELES DODGERS (51-40) - Just because LHP Clayton Kershaw has been down-and-out for the past few weeks doesn't mean the Dodgers are waving a white flag on this 2016 season. On the contrary, we fully expect the Dodgers to be "buyers" if they are able to land one or two starting pitchers (see Tampa Bay's Matt Moore and/or Oakland's Rich Hill) plus LA may be searching for a bat too with A's outfielder Khris Davis high on the list.
Jim Hurley and his Network of Handicappers and Bloggers are banging outs lots of winners in Major-League Baseball these days and all you need to do is check in either right here online or via our toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453 any time after 1 p.m. Eastern time for the weeknight action, after 11 a.m. ET for weekday games and after 10 a.m. ET for Saturday and Sunday. COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S OPENING-WEEK MENU
Are you absolutely itching for a start at this year's College Football season? Umm, us too!
So, after eyeballing a bunch of the media week jazz the past few days let's present what is ahead for the opening week/weekend of the 2016 College Football Season that officially kicks off Saturday, August 27th with California at Hawaii and Charleston Southern at North Dakota State:
Thursday, Sept. 1 ...
South Carolina at Vanderbilt - The aforementioned SEC season swings into action with this tilt in Music City and the heat's on from the get-go for new Carolina head coach Will Muschamp.
Friday, Sept. 2 ...
Kansas State at Stanford - Is this where a Heisman Trophy season for Cardinal RB Christian McCaffrey begins?
Saturday, Sept. 3 ...
UCLA at Texas A&M - Who will Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin settle on to quarterback this bunch?
LSU vs. Wisconsin (at Lambeau Field) - Will the loser already be kayoed from the College Football Playoff chase?
Georgia vs. North Carolina (at Georgia Dome) - The pro-Bulldogs crowd welcomes new boss Kirby Smart who hopes some of his old Alabama magic works here.
USC vs. Alabama (at Arlington) - No doubt the Crimson Tide's the odds-on favorite to win it all (again!).
NFL TEAM-BY-TEAM GLANCES
It is summertime and that means the annual Jim Sez report on all 32 NFL teams with our quick-hitter looks finally wrapping up today with the Denver Broncos and he Green Bay Packers ... and check out our quickie pointspread ditties too. Last year's SU (straight-up) records appear next to the team name below and includes all post-season results:
DENVER (15-4) - The Broncos say that star CB Aqib Talib is not expected to miss any time after suffering a gunshot wound to his leg this past offseason. Talib helped Denver finish first in the NFL in pass defense a year ago (yielded only 199.6 ypg). The team's current depth chart lists Talib as the starter at the left cornerback spot with Bradley Roby listed as the top backup while Chris Harris expected to start at the right cornerback spot for defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' crew.
Pointspread Notes - The Super Bowl 50 champs registered a rather modest 9-6-4 ATS (against the spread) mark that featured spread wins in the AFC Championship Game against 3-point favorite New England and versus 5-point fav Carolina in SB 50. Overall, the Broncos are a solid 39-28-5 spreadwise dating back the past four years.
GREEN BAY (11-7) - Trust us, there's some really strange scheduling in the NFL this year and one such example is the fact the Packers play four consecutive home games between Week 3 and Week 7 (note that Week 4 is GB's bye). Green Bay hosts Detroit, the New York Giants, Dallas and Chicago during this four-game home stretch. In other words, Mike McCarthy's club doesn't have to pack any travel bags from Sept. 19th through very late October. But then there's a three-game road stretch from Nov. 13th through Nov. 28th at Tennessee, Washington and Philadelphia - the Pack may want to have a little cushion in the divisional race before trekking on that road trip.
Pointspread Notes - Last year the Packers lost all three of their home games to divisional rivals Detroit, Chicago and Minnesota and, of course, they failed to cover all three games. The last time Green Bay went winless versus the vig at home against fellow NFC Central clubs was way back in 2005 when the Pack finished 0-2-1 ATS against the Lions/Bears/Vikings.
