THE BASEBALL REPORT: WHAT TO WATCH THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ON THE DIAMOND (AND WHERE WE'RE GONNA CASH!)
Not so fast, Okie City!
Sure, Billy Donovan's gang was a major pest right to the very end of last night's 120-111 road loss at 7.5-point favorite Golden State but when the dust settled the defending champion Warriors had the answers ... a strong dose of Stephen Curry (31 points), an uber-special night for C Andrew Bogut (15 points, 14 rebounds), a major lift from the bench (see 30 points and 10 assists) and just enough emotional energy from that wild Oracle Arena crowd.
So we will have a Game 6 come Saturday night but first let's hit the re-wind button:
WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS - GOLDEN STATE 120, OKLAHOMA CITY 111 - Thunder leads series 3-2; Game 6 is Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, TNT
Want to know the "real key" to this Warriors' gotta-have-it win in Game 5?
Look no further than that 8-0 scoring spree right at the very start of the fourth quarter that catapulted G-State from a slim 81-77 lead to 89-77.
Timeout Oklahoma City ... but too late. Despite all the 11th-hour attempts at a miracle comeback the Thunder - which played hard from the start and saw Kevin Durant (40 points) and Russell Westbrook combine for 71 points on a whopping 59 FG attempts - never did have a real shot after that early 4th-quarter spritz and it's duly noted that the big baskets here were triples by Andre Iguodala and Harrison Barnes and a jumper by Shaun Livingston ... in other words, guys not named Curry and Klay Thompson (27 points) really stuck in the dagger when it mattered.
Here's how this playoff series has gone so far between the Thunder and the Warriors (all home teams are in CAPS below):
|5-16||Okla City||+ 7.5||GOLDEN ST||108-102|
|5-18||GOLDEN ST||- 9||Okla City||118-91|
|5-22||OKLA CITY||+ 2.5||Golden St.||133-105|
|5-24||OKLA CITY||+ 2||Golden St.||118-94|
|5-26||GOLDEN ST||- 7.5||Okla City||120-111|

Tonight, it's ...EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS - CLEVELAND at TORONTO - Cavaliers lead series 3-2; 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
If you happen to believe that "things happen in 3's" than you're likely inclined to think the Toronto Raptors will win here and thus play in a third consecutive Game 7 - also, NBA bettors know that the Cleveland Cavaliers are a disappointing 2-6 ATS (against the spread) away in this year's playoffs and that includes straight-up losses twice in this series North of the Border.
But, the flip side wonders if the Raptors are gonna be hit with another dose of reality here in Game 6 ... after all, LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin James did combine for 71 points in Wednesday's rollicking 116-78 triumph over Toronto in Game 5 of this series and that stepped-up Cav defense really - they were super-aggressive all over the floor -- applied the clamps on that hot-and-cold Raptors' backcourt of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry (see 7-of-20 FG shooting for 27 meaningless points in that Game 5).
Home court has equaled a 5-and-oh pointspread mark for the wagering crowd in this Eastern Conference series - if that continues here than the 6.5-point pup Raptors must get some monster off-the-bench game (we know we've been saying that for days now!) and maybe tonight's when Patrick Patterson and/or Terrence Ross "goes off" ... we're waiting!
Here's how this playoff series has gone so far between the Raptors and the Cavaliers (home teams are in CAPS below):
THE WEEKEND BASEBALL REPORT
Crank up the barbecues, get the cooler chest stocked with ice/beverages and let's bang out some Memorial Day Weekend winners on the ole diamond ... here's a couple of series that will get us all heated up:
LOS ANGELES DODGERS (25-23) at NEW YORK METS (27-19) - It's a big holiday weekend in NYC where the Mets are honoring their 1986 world championship team (yes, the last time the Mets won the World Series for you young kids!) and it all gets revved up with the Dodgers starting 19-year southpaw sensation Julio Urias this evening against Mets RHP Jacob deGrom. The temps are supposed to be in the mid-to-high 80s - "over" anyone? - but going anti-Mets in Sunday's Bartolo Colon start might be on our menu.
BOSTON (29-18) at TORONTO (24-25) - Three-game weekend set North of the Border where the Blue Jays are a hard-to-explain 9-13 this year but winning two-of-three this past week at Yankee Stadium is bound to energize John Gibbons' club. We'll likely to "paying attention" to the Jays here when getting a shot at former mate LHP David Price plus stay with Jim Hurley's Network all weekend long as we could be cashin' if Toronto's either a small fav or a dog against righty Rick Porcello.
