A Jim Sez Look at the Final Four

THE JIM SEZ NCAA TOURNAMENT UPDATE

HEY, THE FINAL FOUR IS SET AND WE HAVE TEAM-BY-TEAM SUMMARIES AS #2 SEEDS 'NOVA AND OKLAHOMA WILL DO BATTLE THIS SATURDAY, WHILE ACC FOES #10 SYRACUSE, #1 NORTH CAROLINA GET THE PRIME-TIME STAGE

Can we venture a guess and say neither you nor your best bracket buddy had this as your Final Four?

It's funny how in a year when more than an estimated 50 percent of the country had #2 seed Michigan State cutting down the nets in Houston, it's a different pair of #2 seeds - that's Villanova and Oklahoma - that will fight it out for the right to play in next Monday's NCAA Tournament Championship Game while who amongst you had #10 Syracuse getting to this year's Final Four?
Sorry, we're not hurling any "extra credit" your way if you had #1 seed North Carolina making it to the Final Four … but if they just so happen to be the only #1 seed you had getting this far, than please take a prolonged bow!

Meanwhile, we are also here to remind you that NCAA Tournament Betting Favorites are a collective 36-27-0 with one pick 'em game (a nifty .571 winning rate for the chalk-eaters) as we head into Saturday's Final Four tilts in Texas and - get a load of this - the four teams that have survived-and-advanced to this point are a composite 14-2 ATS (against the spread) for a whopping .875 winning percentage in this year's NCAA Tournament. Va-va-va- voom!

Jim Hurley and his Network of Handicappers and Bloggers have been steamrolling their way through the month of March with loads of College Basketball tournament winners and it ain't gonna stop yet now that we're about ready to hit April! THE NCAA TOURNAMENT'S FINAL FOUR

Here's some quick-hitter looks at the Final Four teams with a reminder that we'll have game previews/team charts/etc. all this week long right here at Jim Sez:

WEST REGIONAL CHAMP
#2 OKLAHOMA (29-7)
- Wonder how many folks in the great state of Oklahoma are gonna be naming their first-borns "Buddy" after the one-and-only Buddy Hield catapulted the Sooners into this weekend's Final Four with that delicious 37-point performance in that rollicking 80-68 win against Oregon?
Hield hit every big shot you could imagine - the Ducks had a couple of mini-runs extinguished by the soon-to-be-named Wooden Award winner - and so now OU guns for a first-ever NCAA Tournament crown and we say one major key in the upcoming game against Villanova is G Isaiah Cousins is gonna have to be more careful with the ball when those traps come his way.

SOUTH REGIONAL CHAMP
#2 VILLANOVA (33-5)
- As one t-shirt in the crowd said, the Wildcats "Want to Party Like it's 1985."

Whoa, that was a long time ago and long before any of this year's Villanova players were born but that magical run 31 years ago has hosts of 'Nova fans smiling again as they believe this could be the year after knocking off #1 overall seed Kansas 64-59 last Saturday night in Louisville.

Sure, Jay Wright's club nailed 18-of-19 free throws including some real late-game FT makes by Kris Jenkins and Jalen Brunson but consider that 'Nova shot just 4-of-18 from downtown and still beat the nation's numero uno team - gotta hand it to the 'Cats for all those steals (many on failed dribble handoffs) and the ferocious post defense played against MIA Perry Ellis. If Villanova does anything close to that against Hield, well, then they'll be singing "V for Villanova, V for victory" all weekend long.

MIDWEST REGIONAL CHAMP
#10 SYRACUSE (23-13)
- So much for the folks (including us!) that didn't deem the Orange worthy of getting into this 68-team NCAA Tournament field! Okay, so head coach Jim Boeheim flipped the script on Virginia in Sunday's wild 68-62 come-from-behind win with a full-court pressing defense doing the trick but let's dish some "love" in the general direction of frosh Malachi Richardson who poured in 21 of his game-high 23 points after intermission as the 'Cuse roared back from a 16-point, second-half deficit to win.

Maybe lost amidst the great comeback - remember Syracuse at one point outscored a normally-dominant Virginia defense 25-to-4 - was the fact that Boeheim's bunch held Cav mega-star Malcolm Brogdon to 2-of-14 FG shooting and if the Orange can just hold down one (or two) of North Carolina's big guns come Saturday night, well, then this magical mystery tour will roll on.

EAST REGIONAL CHAMP
#1 NORTH CAROLINA (32-6)
- Maybe the Tar Heels should have head coach Roy Williams "practice" cutting down the nets this week 'cause he was a bit rusty following Sunday night's electric 88-74 win against 9.5-point pup Notre Dame. Okay, so Williams sliced the palm of his hand after getting a little shaky up on the ladder plus he allegedly bit his tongue too - the guy seems to be a real klutz - but say this for Mr. Williams … he has a veteran team playing its best ball of the year right now and check out the accompanying chart below and you'll see Carolina's beaten its four NCAA Tournament foes by a composite 64 points (or 16 points per game).

No doubt that scoring run midway of the second half that catapulted the Tar Heels to a 63-52 lead turned into the real jawbreaker after both Notre Dame and North Carolina spent much of the game's first 30-or-so minutes trading jabs with hot shooters galore. In the end, Carolina's jumping jack Brice Johnson (25 points and 12 rebounds) was the star of the show but keep something in mind and that's the deep Heels received 18 big points from their reserves and those pine-grabbers could make all the difference in the world versus Syracuse this Saturday night.
