Jim Sez for Friday, November 27 …
HERE’S OUR NFL WEEK 12 THANKSGIVING DAY WRAPUP –
LIONS, PANTHERS & BEARS ARE THE ONES THAT
GOBBLE UP KEY TURKEY DAY WINS …
QUICK-HITTER COMMENTS ON SATURDAY’S COLLEGE ACTION
INVOLVING #8 OHIO STATE, #9 STANFORD
Go ahead and raise your hand (whether there’s a turkey leg lodged between your fingers or not!) and tell us that you thought the Green Bay Packers would wind up with “low score for the day” in the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day/Night games.
Hard to believe that the Packers – now losers of their last four-of-five games – would be low man in that rainy/dank 17-13 loss to the 8-point underdog Chicago Bears as you could sit there and alibi for Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers (see numbness in his fingers), a non-existent second-half running game or the fact these current receivers simply don’t get open all that often but the proverbial bottom line is the Packers are slip-sliding their way into the abyss and now may even have to sweat out a playoff berth while sitting here today at 7-4 overall … no wonder bearded head coach Mike McCartney was so darn abrupt with the media following this Brett Favre Tribute Game.
Extra, extra …
My handicappers and bloggers are in the holiday spirit and so we’ll continue to rock-n-roll with this year’s Annual Jim Hurley Turkey Shoot all weekend long and so that means lots of winners in NCAA Football, NFL Week 12 action plus on the hardwood too with the NBA and NCAA Hoops.

Yet, while the Packers could only garner one touchdown for the night, the Carolina Panthers (11-0) were shutting up a few more cynics with that 33-14 easy-chair win at 1-point home underdog Dallas.
Go ahead and feel sorry for Cowboys’ QB Tony Romo – geez, we know the dude has bad luck by breaking his clavicle for a second time this 2015 season but all those windbags that thought the ‘Boys were gonna be a “playoff factor” down the stretch can stop the dopey dreaming.
Instead, all hail the Carolina defense starring LB Luke Kuechly (see pick six and then another INT) and funny man QB Cam Newton who danced – no make that “twisted” – his way to another win with 228 total yards (183 passing/45 yards rushing).
Hey, there was plenty of talk this week about the unbeaten Panthers being “disrespected” because there were times the Cowboys were the betting favorite – had to love the fact that Carolina head coach Ron Rivera seemed to keep step with the changing Las Vegas lines all week long! – and now we’re about to make what shouldn’t be considered a nutty statement:
Folks, right here/right now we’d be surprised if the Panthers did not make it to Super Bowl 50 this winter!
And how about the fact this NFC South team is 9-2 ATS (against the spread) this season and that includes a silly 7-2 spread log when in the chalk role. Three cheers, Carolina!
Finally, a quickie comment on the Detroit Lions’ 45-14 start-the-Thanksgiving Day-off win against hapless Philadelphia … you could make the case that Eagles head coach Chip Kelly should have been fired by halftime when the Motowners owned a 24-7 lead and now we’ll “go out on the limb” and forecast Kelly will be either the coach at USC or at the University of Texas by early-to-mid-December!
The Lions nabbed a third straight win – and a third consecutive win on Thanksgiving Day after suffering through a nine-year losing streak on this holiday -- and Detroit QB Matthew Stafford (five scoring strikes) probably elevated his status in fantasy leagues ‘round the land by leaps and bounds. Aw, he “owed” his backers anyway, didn’t he?
Now, if only Detroit can beat Green Bay for a second time this year come Week 13, then the Lions (4-7) might even toss their hat into the playoff chase ring … really!
SATURDAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES
We laid out the weekend plans for the College Football Playoff top six teams in the other day’s Jim Sez column and so let’s toss a couple comments your way regarding other top 10 teams …
#8 OHIO STATE is not buried yet when it comes to this year’s playoffs – a Buckeyes win against Michigan and a Michigan State loss against Penn State gives Urban Meyer’s gang a new life – but can we remind y’all that O-State is an ugly 4-8 versus the vig this year?
#9 STANFORD hosts Notre Dame on this final Saturday night in November and how ‘bout the fact the Cardinal has scored 30-plus points in 10 straight games? Better yet, Stanford’s covered eight of its last 10 tilts since that season-opening loss at Northwestern. A win here and then a Pac-12 title win plus some fortunate results from the teams ahead of Stanford could have the Palo Alto still with hopes of slipping into the four-team playoff mix.
NOTE: More NFL Week 12 goodies in tomorrow’s Jim Sez.
