WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS JAM-PACKED SATURDAY ...
THE BASEBALL WEEKEND AHEAD - GIANTS-BUCCOS CONTINUE THEIR FOUR-GAME MAJOR CLASH
If you checked this NFL Preseason Week #2 sked, than you know it's a busy-bee Saturday with eight games on the docket and so we're gonna take a few moments to get you our quick-hitter comments on what to watch here:
On Saturday, it's ...
MIAMI (0-1) at CAROLINA (1-0) - 7 p.m. ET
Naturally, the news revolves here around what the Carolina Panthers do now without injured WR Kelvin Benjamin (73 catches for 1,008 yards and 9 TDs as a rookie last year) who's gone for the year with a knee injury and don't forget rookie WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) will sit this game out too - there's two reasons this Las Vegas line shift from Carolina minus a point to Miami minus a point.
BALTIMORE (1-0) at PHILADELPHIA (1-0) - 7 p.m. ET
Forget this new wave of TebowMania that's hit the City of Brotherly Love - what you really should be watching for here is how Eagles' QB Mark Sanchez chucks it after being a tad erratic in the team's preseason opener a week ago. Hey, we've marked down Philly as an NFL team that genuinely wants to win in the preseason as third-year head coach Chip Kelly's in a prove-it mode (again!). So, is the 3.5-point price a "bargain" here?
CHICAGO (1-0) at INDIANAPOLIS (0-1) - 7:30 p.m. ET
The Colts practically sat out half their team in last Sunday's so-what 36-10 loss in Philadelphia but one player that raised eyebrows is rookie WR Phillip Dorsett (four receptions for 51 yards but one lost fumble on a strip) and this past week Indy head coach Chuck Pagano called the University of Miami speedball "a big play waiting to happen". It'll be fun watching him go head-up against Bears' CBs Kyle Fuller and/or Tim Jennings - both of whom have plenty to prove to new head coach John Fox. Hey, this might be a Jim Hurley winner, so check with us game-day morning here online or at the toll-free # of 1-800-323-4453.
NEW ENGLAND (0-1) at NEW ORLEANS (0-1) - 7:30 p.m.
Everyone's getting more than a bit fatigued regarding DeflateGate but one thing we believe overlooked in the NFL Preseason Week 1 tilts was the fact Patriots' backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo was sacked seven times in last Thursday's 22-11 loss to Green Bay ... was that all a product of poor pass protection or might the young Garoppolo simply have held the ball too long a few times? Gut feeling the Saints' defense will "bring the heat" here against Tom Brady's caddy which could lead to some defensive scoring - take note the 43-point totals price is the second-highest on the board behind the Baltimore-Philadelphia price tag of 44.5.
JACKSONVILLE (1-0) at NEW YORK GIANTS - 7:30 p.m. ET
Little by little you can see the steam rising out of the head of Giants' coach Tom Coughlin - his offensive line is out of sorts with G Geoff Schwartz (ankle) seemingly never able to practice three days in a row and rookie OT Erick Flowers (hip) has been gimping around lately plus wide outs Odell Beckham, Jr. and Victor Cruz apparently can work on TV commercials together but rarely on the practice field at the same time. Hmmm! Last week Coughlin complained about "no tempo, no rhythm" to his team's offense - we'll see if there's a better start here following last week's 23-10 no-life loss in Cincinnati.
DENVER (1-0) at HOUSTON (1-0) - 8 p.m. ET
It makes for a nice storyline that current Broncos' head coach Gary Kubiak is going back to Houston where he served as the team's head coach from 2006-thru-2013 but, in reality, this game remains about the current quarterback battle on the 2015 Texans. Truth is Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett have been painfully inconsistent in practice - haven't you been watching Hard Knocks the past couple of weeks? - and there's real pressure here with Mallett announced as this game starter. Remember that Houston failed to score a touchdown late in the first half last week against San Francisco despite having seven cracks from the Niners' two-yard line ... do you really want to be laying preseason points with this Texans' team?
OAKLAND (1-0) at MINNESOTA (2-0) - 8 p.m. ET
Note the last time an NFL team went 5-and-oh SU (straight-up) in a preseason was back in 1997 when - believe it or not - both the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers turned that trick - and note last year three NFL teams went unbeaten SU at 4-0 in preseason action (see Baltimore, these Vikings and the New York Giants) ... and this trio combined to win one playoff game. Here the Vikes are a 5-point betting fav - the largest price on the Preseason Week 2 board - but remember they'll be playing this game forward without RT Phil Loadholt who tore his Achilles Heel in last weekend's 26-16 win/cover against Tampa Bay.
SAN DIEGO (1-0) at ARIZONA (0-1) - 10 p.m. ET
So much for this being an all good-news summer for the 'Zona Cardinals as new OG Mike Iupati (left knee surgery) will be out for up to two months and - as it is - much of this camp revolves around how QB Carson Palmer is protected. Last week the veteran slinger completed all eight of his passes but this reshuffled Arizona O-line could face major heat from a Chargers' defense that is stressing more blitzes.
The 2015 NFL Preseason rock-n-rolls on this week with Week 2 action Week 2 action continuing tonight - that's Atlanta at the New York Jets and Seattle at Kansas City -- and then there's Eight (8) games on Saturday featuring New England at New Orleans and then there's Three (3) more games on Sunday with St. Louis at Tennessee aired on Fox (8 p.m. ET) and then it all wraps up for the week on Monday Night as the Cincinnati Bengals are at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET.
Note that the College Football campaign swings into high gear on Thursday, September 3rd with 41 games in all scheduled for that entire Labor Day weekend (that's Thursday-thru-Monday with games each day) and it all begins with South Carolina versus North Carolina (from Charlotte) on ESPN at 6 p.m. ET on Sept. 3 plus the weekend card is really terrific with such marquee matchups as Arizona State vs. Texas A&M (from Houston), Texas at Notre Dame and Wisconsin vs. Alabama (from Arlington).
You definitely want to be in the winner's circle for all the big opening-week College Football tilts and again remember there's action for five days in a row beginning Sept. 3rd and taking you right through that Labor Day evening bash between defending national champion Ohio State at Virginia Tech.

THE BASEBALL UPDATE
As one great baseball man (see Casey Stengel) used to say way back when, "You can look it up." And go ahead and look this up - we've played three-quarters of this 2015 season and just about the only thing you could say for sure is that the Kansas City Royals will win the American League Central but nobody else (including the St. Louis Cardinals) have sewn up a divisional crown just yet.
This August weekend there's plenty of playoff-related baseball on the docket including ...
In the National League, it's ...
SAN FRANCISCO (65-56) at PITTSBURGH (72-47) - The Pirates drew first blood in this four-game set with last night's 4-0 win but the news prior to the game was that defending champs had traded for veteran OF Marlon Byrd (note that RF Hunter Pence's oblique injury is gonna keep him down for a while). Hey, when is someone gonna start mentioning Giants C Buster Posey (.321, 16 HR and 78 RBI) as a legit National League MVP candidate - and when are the national media folks gonna realize there's major magic on the side of the Buccos who might just own the best bullpen in baseball (another 2.1 innings of scoreless work in relief of RHP Charlie Morton's eighth win of the year).
In the American League, it's ...
TORONTO (66-55) at LOS ANGELES ANGELS (63-58) - These teams are battling for a wild card spot in the jammed-up American League and did you realize that the Jays have won 16 of their last 20 games and are still trailing the New York Yankees by 1.5 games in the AL East? Hey, one of our favorite stats is the run differential deal and check out the fact that Toronto is a plus 138 and the Angels are just a plus 30.
NOTE: More NFL Preseason Week 2 Previews plus College Football goodies too in the next edition of Jim Sez as we start to get you all the FBS conference-by-conference quick-hitter previews.
