NFL WEEK 13 THANKSGIVING DAY WRAPUP
OUR NFL WEEK 13 THANKSGIVING DAY WRAPUP –
THE LIONS, EAGLES & SEAHAWKS GOBBLE UP TURKEY DAY WINS …
PLUS OUR COLLEGE FOOTBALL
AS WE DELIVER 10 QUICK-HITTER PREVIEWS
Wonder how the once-proud San Francisco 49ers felt when they learned Seattle QB Russell Wilson and CB Richard Sherman were busy chowing down on turkey legs right there on the Niner logo at midfield following last night’s 19-3 Thanksgiving Night win – the NBC folks provided the late-night holiday dinner but the truth is the defending Super Bowl champions Seahawks ate up San Fran in the latest matchup of these hated rivals with Wilson scrambling about and throwing for 236 yards while Sherman picked off two passes (he dropped a potential third INT) in a shutdown showing in the Bay Area.
It makes you consider two things:
San Francisco (7-5) could be cooked even though the Niners will get another shot at the oft-mouthy Seahawks come December 14th and, of course, it gives juice to the debate the Seahawks “are back” as they’ve won back-to-back 19-3 verdicts against the two other key NFC West rivals with last week’s 16-point home win against Arizona followed up by this dominant showing.
Could the Seahawks be headed back to a Super Bowl … and is the Jim Harbaugh Era close to an ending?
Meanwhile, both the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions scored 33 and 34 points, respectively, in their Thanksgiving Day wins at Dallas and versus Chicago and here’s what we have to say about that:
Butt Fumble … c’mon that was so 2012 as Philly QB Mark Sanchez (217 passing yards and 28 rushing yards with two TDs) was no butt end of any gridiron jokes on this Turkey Day unlike two years ago when the world mocked the then-New York Jet for his dubious lost fumble after running into a teammate’s large backside …
While the Lions powered up their passing game – finally – in the 34-17 win against Chicago as WRs Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate combined for 19 receptions and QB Matthew Stafford finally learned how to get his team into the end zone after the Motowners had registered all of five FGs in recent back-to-back losses in Arizona and Foxboro.
Long live the Lions on Thanksgiving Day (that’s two wins in a row after the nine-year Turkey Day losing skid).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WHIP-AROUND
Hey, there’s so many key games/rivalry games on this Thanksgiving Weekend docket that we decided to “drop some knowledge” about the 10-best tilts on this Friday/Saturday menu … so here goes:
On Friday, it’s …
ARKANSAS (6-5) at #17 MISSOURI (9-2) – 2:30 p.m. ET, CBS
A win here for Mizzou and the Tigers will be going to a second straight SEC Championship Game but Arkansas has covered four games in a row since late October and has fingers crossed that QB Brandon Allen (hip) will get green-lighted here even though he failed to practice this week.
#13 ARIZONA STATE (9-2) at #11 ARIZONA (9-2) – 3:30 p.m. ET, Fox
More QB-related news here as Arizona star slinger Anu Solomon (right foot) is iffy after being subbed out of last week’s rollicking 42-10 triumph at Utah. Keep in mind the winner of this Territorial Cup game heads to the Pac-12 Championship Game providing UCLA loses its home game against Stanford.
STANFORD (6-5) at #8 UCLA (9-2) – 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
Don’t dare call this year’s Bruins bunch “soft” as third-year head coach Jim Mora has ingrained a real toughness to this team’s game – the Uclans are peaking these days (see three consecutive wins/covers) and QB Brett Hundley in a prove-it mode after Stanford bested ‘em 24-10 a year ago. Have you noticed how UCLA’s fortunes changed for the better when LT Conor McDermott was inserted into Hundley’s blind-side blocker?
On Saturday, it’s …
#16 GEORGIA TECH (9-2) at #9 GEORGIA (9-2) – 12 p.m. ET, SEC Network
Georgia Tech already knows it’s in the ACC Championship Game versus Florida State next weekend – Georgia knows it gets into the SEC Championship Game with a win here if only Missouri loses Friday afternoon against Arkansas. Still, the Dawgs – a hefty 12 ½-point betting favorite at press time – look to fifth-year senior QB Hutson Mason to shine after he rallied the troops last year to beat G-Tech 41-34 after then-starter Aaron Murray was injured.
MICHIGAN (5-6) at #6 OHIO STATE (10-1) – 12 p.m. ET, ABC
We’re starting to hear that the Buckeyes’ loss against Virginia Tech back on Sept. 6th might not be the “death blow” to Ohio State’s playoff hopes – but if Urban Meyer’s guys wish to become part of the CFP conversation then it needs a “margin win” against 3-TD dog Michigan and so fully expect frosh QB J.T. Barrett to take over here against a maize-and-blue bunch that’s allowed just 66 points the last five games.
FLORIDA (6-4) at #3 FLORIDA STATE (11-0) – 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
The 2014 edition of the Florida State Seminoles are using that old Al Davis adage … Just Win, Baby! No doubt that Jimbo Fisher’s blood pressure numbers have gone up while watching his club win games by 6, 6 (in OT), 4, 4 and 3 points this year and QB Jameis Winston has not always been perfect on the field (see 14 INTs) and now the challenge is to fend off a rival soon to be saying goodbye to head coach Will Muschamp … what, you’ll be surprised if this is another white knuckler special?
#4 MISS STATE (10-1) at #19 OLE MISS (9-3) – 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS
Okay, so a while back we all thought this could be a #1 vs. #2 type tilt but injuries/ineffective play on Ole Miss’ part and that danged ‘Bama win against Miss State spoiled those day dreams but there’s still lots on the line here for the visiting Bulldogs who have held five teams to 16 or fewer points this year (betcha didn’t know that!) and M-State QB Dak Prescott – a hero in last year’s 17-10 Egg Bowl win – is looking to give head coach Dan Mullen five-of-six wins in this key rivalry game.
NOTRE DAME (7-4) at USC (7-4) – 3:30 p.m. ET, Fox
No Top 25 ranking for either one of these teams that instead play for pride – and a better bowl game in December – and let’s see if Irish PK Kyle Brindza suffers any hangovers from missing last week’s last-second FG try in the loss to Louisville. O.S., have you noticed how USC staggers badly in the second half of all these game because of the scholarship restrictions?
#15 AUBURN (8-3) at #1 ALABAMA (10-1) – 7:45 p.m. ET, ESPN
So, what can this year’s Iron Bowl do to top last year’s 109-yard FG return for a TD by Auburn’s Chris Davis – still the best single play we’ve ever seen in a football game! – and the answer is stay tuned. The ‘Bama Crimson Tide does catch a somewhat free-falling War Eagle squad here (see three straight spread losses) and no doubt that the QB Blake Sims-to-WR Amari Cooper combo is becoming one of the land’s best – does a small Alabama win drop ‘em in the CFP rankings?
#2 OREGON (10-1) at OREGON STATE (5-6) – 8 p.m. ET, ABC
Pointspread folks know that Oregon’s covered six of the last nine head-to-head decisions against archrival Oregon State but now it’s more important than ever for the Ducks to cover the 19 ½-point price here ‘cause CFP rankings are on the line.
Safe to say that Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is the Heisman Trophy frontrunner and he’s already accounted for a Pac-12 record 42 TDs this year (32 of them passing scores) while this Ducks’ defense needs some love/respect after holding five of their foes to 20-or-fewer points.
