By Jim Hurley:
Just in case you were wondering, the USC Trojans are eligible for post-season play this 2012 NCAA Football Season - and the Ohio State Buckeyes are not.
And the almighty Southeastern Conference sports five teams in the season-opening Associated Press Top 25 and - if you ask us - all five of 'em (that's #2 Alabama, #3 LSU, #6 Georgia, #9 South Carolina and #10 Arkansas) are equipped to win it all and thus make it seven consecutive BCS champions from the SEC.
No doubt about it that there are a glut of real-life great storylines this College Football Season and it's merely impossible to get into each and every one of 'em here in today's jam-packed edition of Jim Sez but we will do our very best to tackle the Five Biggest Storylines this year - see if you agree, okay? - and we remind you that throughout the remainder of this ultra-busy gridiron week we will bring you daily NCAA Football Game Previews beginning with Thursday's big TV tilts (see South Carolina at Vanderbilt and Washington State at BYU) and rollin' right through this coming Labor Day Weekend!
The Five Biggest Storylines for this College Football Season comes your way in just a moment but first this key reminder:
Jim Hurley and his Network of Handicappers and Bloggers are ready to rock-n-roll this Football Season and it really/truly swings into action this week as the 2012 NCAA Football Seasons is just a couple of days away and keep in mind it's a busy season-opening week that includes such high-profile games as Thursday night's SEC tilt between South Carolina at Vanderbilt along with Friday action featuring Tennessee versus N.C. State at the Georgia Dome, Saturday's menu featuring Clemson vs. Auburn (also in said Georgia Dome), Sunday's couple of gridiron goodies including Kentucky at Louisville and than it's all capped off on Labor Day evening with an ACC showdown between Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech - we can't wait, can you?
Plus, Jim Hurley and his crew will stay on top of things in this final week of NFL Preseason action and than taking you right though a sure-to-be-thrilling NFL 2012 campaign. Make sure to check in with us on Game Days either right here online or else at our exclusive toll-free telephone # of 1-800-323-4453 for all the NCAA & NFL Winners and get all the daily and nightly Major-League Baseball winners too. Let's pile up the profits together from here right thru Super Bowl XLVII.
Now, here's College Football Five (5) Biggest Storylines while entering the here-and-now 2012 season:
#1 - THE SEC GOES FOR 7 TITLES IN A ROW ...
No question that this mega-loaded conference has its sights set on snagging yet another national championship but keep in mind what happened last year (see LSU beats Alabama in regular-season game and then 'Bama beats LSU in BCS Championship Game) ain't gonna happen again because the nation as a whole won't accept another one of those "rematch" deals. The truth of the matter is -- despite the fact the SEC's copped six straight national crowns -- nobody's repeated during this time and the odds of everything falling just right for the Crimson Tide here are long indeed as keep in mind Alabama must play at LSU on the first Saturday in November. One other possibility that works against the SEC this year: They simply may not have an undefeated team come the SEC Championship Game while two other leagues - and we're thinking the Pac-12 (see USC) and the Big 12 (see Oklahoma) - might have squads with perfect records when the dust settles in early December.
#2 - THE HEISMAN TROPHY IS MORE WIDE-OPEN THAN YOU MIGHT THINK ...
Listen to the pundits and they'll be quick to tell you that USC quarterback Matt Barkley, Wisconsin RB Montee Ball and Michigan QB Denard Robinson are the leading Heisman Trophy candidates while heading into the 2012 season but expect some other folks to toss their hat into the proverbial ring sooner rather than later and right now the names that pop into mind are Oklahoma QB Landry Jones, South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore and maybe even West Virginia slinger Geno Smith. If there is a defensive player that could get serious Heisman Trophy consideration that think about Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o.
#3 - THE COACHING WORLD WILL GET REALLY INTERESTING AT OHIO STATE, WASHINGTON STATE AND ARIZONA ...
Three of the sport's biggest names have new address boxes including Ohio State's Urban Meyer, Washington State's Mike Leach and Arizona's Rich Rodriguez and all three of 'em have a way of stirring major debate. Consider that the aforementioned OSU Buckeyes can't go bowling this year and cannot play in the Big 10 Championship Game but that doesn't mean Meyer's season will go under the radar as everyone's watching what goes down in Columbus and especially with QB Braxton Miller and ditto for Leach and Rodriguez who burnt their bridges big-time at Texas Tech and Michigan, respectively, and these two guys won't get a whole long honeymoon from either school alums or the national media should they stub their toes in 2012.
#4 - YOU KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE A FEW TEAMS THAT CRUMBLE BADLY, BUT WHO WILL THEY BE? ...
Okay, so there are folks waiting for the "shoe to drop" in places such as Oregon, Arkansas and West Virginia but all three of those teams still sport world-class offenses and save for a key injury to a quarterback here these clubs figure to snag 10-or-more wins on the year but you may want to trade how things happen at Virginia Tech and Michigan State. Both of these club come into play ranked in the top 16 (Michigan State's at #13 and V-Tech's at #16) as quarterback problems at the former could be a major issue while giving help to Hokies do-it-all QB Logan Thomas might well be a shortcoming for Frank Beamer's bunch. Plus, check the skeds as M-State could be 1-2 out of the chute while Virginia Tech also could get dunked twice in its first three weeks of play.
#5 - ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S NON-BCS LEAGUES WILL AGAIN SPORT A NATIONAL TITLE WANNA-BE ...
Hey, it happens just about every year when looking back at the recent likes of Boise State or TCU or even Utah if you're willing to go back a few years and something tells us one of the non-power conferences will have an unbeaten team at year's end and it probably won't be Top 25 member Boise State. Hey, would be it a normal college football season without some BCS Championship Game matchup controversy, right?
NFL PRESEASON NEWS & NOTES
First things first:
NFL Preseason Betting Favorites exited Sunday night's Week 3 action at 20-27-1 ATS (against the spread) with one pick 'em game for a .425 winning rate and note the just-completed Preseason Week 3 games included chalk sides going 7-9 versus the vig. Here's the week-by-week Favs vs. Dogs spread lowdown this NFL Preseason:
|PRE WK #||FAVS||OVERS|
Meanwhile, NFL "Over" Bettors will enter the Preseason Week 4 tilts later this week with a collective 27-21-1 ATS mark (a .563 winning percentage) after their second consecutive winning weeks this summer (see accompanying chart):
Note that Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets all have yet to cover a single pointspread this summer time (and the Cardinals are 0-4 vig-wise) and folks are still waiting for the J-E-T-S to register their first touchdown of the preseason. Is it really possible that the Jets are 0-for-37 in terms of touchdowns vs. possessions and anyone that eyeballed Sunday Night's 17-12 Carolina Panthers win against the 2-point home favorite Jets knows that neither QB Mark Sanchez nor highly-hyped backup QB Tim Tebow has worked any real magic (especially in the red zone) and already we've seen quite enough of Tebow holding the ball far too long and throwing the ball while running right - egads!
The "dress rehearsal" games have been put in the rear-view mirror and the silly Preseason Week 4 games come your way Wednesday/Thursday night. Spare us already!
