THE NFL REPORT: IT'S TIME TO LOOK BACK - AND THAN AHEAD TO 2012

WE OFFICIALLY RING OUT THE '11 SEASON WITH THE FINAL POINTSPREAD STANDINGS, PLUS THE "ODDS TO WIN IT ALL" IN SB 47...

COLLEGE BASKETBALL MID-WEEK UPDATE: CHECKIN' OUT A COUPLE OF HOT-HOT-HOT TEAMS IN ACTION ON THIS WEDNESDAY NITE

By Jim Hurley:

Hey, NFL fans, don't be glum!

The 2012 regular season is just seven months away and - forgive us for guessing - but we think that the now-traditional Thursday night "Kickoff Game" pitting the defending Super Bowl champion versus a high-profile opponent likely will give a New Orleans Saints at New York Giants tilt in early September.

Sound good to you? There also could be some sentiment to having Green Bay or Pittsburgh play this prime-timer at MetLife Stadium, so stay tuned.

The Giants continue to revel in the glory of being New York/New Jersey heroes these days (and who can blame 'em!) and while they savor their second Super Bowl title in the past four years they are far from the betting favorites to win it all next year (we'll get to that in a moment).

Let's look back first at the final NFL Pointspread Standings and note that these ATS (against the spread) records include the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl XLVI:

NFL ODDS TO WIN IT ALL FOR SUPER BOWL XLVII

Now, without further ado here are the up-to-date Odds to Win it All for Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans next February (listing only the 18-to-1 and shorter-priced teams here):

TEAM ODDS EARLY-BIRD COMMENT
Green Bay 6-to-1 The 2011 Packers had the home field throughout the playoffs and that didn't 'em any good - now MVP QB Aaron Rodgers is on a new mission
New England 7-to-1 Hard to believe that the famed Bill Belichick/Tom Brady tandem has not won it all since the 2004 season - call it a major drought, indeed
New Orleans 8.5-to-1 The best pointspread team in the NFL this year better learn to tackle/cover better if it wishes to host SB 47 a year from now
Houston 12-to-1 Gotta admit that the Texans look awfully tempting at this price tag but will Wade Phillips still be this team's DC in 2012?
Philadelphia 12-to-1 The so-called "Dream Team" monikor is dead-and-buried and no doubt these Eagles have lots of ammo and something to prove too
Pittsburgh 12-to-1 The Steelers, Patriots and Giants own two SB titles apiece the past 10 years and AFC North guys just hoping for a healthy QB Ben Roethlisberger
Baltimore 14-to-1 What's the odds that both WR Lee Evans and PK Billy Cundiff will be part of the Ravens' opening-day roster in 2012?
NY GIANTS 15-to-1 Back in 2006 we predicted the Manning Bros would win 5 of the next 10 Super Bowls but who knew Eli would already have a pair of titles by now?
NY Jets 16-to-1 Now that gang green's been told whose "house" they play in (see Giants Justin Tuck) it's time to zip the lip and play for keeps - okay, Rex?
San Diego 16-to-1 The Chargers are a real dark-horse pick here as QB Philip Rivers has to play better in '12 and there's young talent ready to blossom on "D"
San Francisco 16-to-1 Wonder how much this "win it all" price changes when/if QB Peyton Manning signs on the dotted line with the Niners?
Dallas 18-to-1 There's a lot that's broken in Cowboys Nation these days and this might be "last call" for QB Tony Romo and some of his closest friends
Detroit 18-to-1 The Lions won't win anything of significance until they clean up their bad-boy act … listening head coach Jim Schwartz?

COLLEGE BASKETBALL'S MID-WEEK UPDATE

Let's check out a couple of College Basketball teams that are red-hot and in action here on this second Wednesday in February:

#15 FLORIDA STATE (16-6, 7-1 ACC) - Yes, we know that Duke-North Carolina Part I is tonight in Chapel Hill but we're also here to tell you that the Tar Heels' current five-game winning streak ain't the longest in Atlantic Coast Conference play these days as the FSU Seminoles trek in Boston College this evening riding a spiffy seven-game SU (straight-up) winning streak.

The 'Noles - who enter the day tied with North Carolina atop the ACC standings - are fresh off their tug-of-war 58-55 non-cover triumph over 5 ½-point underdog Virginia last Saturday afternoon when key reserve Okaro White poured in a team-best 13 points and played some splendid defense too on Cavs star Mike Scott.

If Florida State can smother BC's perimeter shooters here than the Seminoles likely would be headed to an eighth straight win and that hasn't happened in five years - and do keep in mind that the Eagles have lost their last six consecutive games and are sharing the ACC basement these days with both Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.

One item that Florida State must improve on here is turnovers: The 'Noles average 17 offensive turnovers a game and that's worst among all 12 ACC squads.

TULSA (14-9, 7-2 C-USA) - Don't look now but the Golden Hurricane has won seven in a row and has not lost a game since January 7th (see SMU57, Tulsa 55).

Now, it's a road date this evening at UTEP and so it's an all-hands-on-deck game for the 'Canes and G Jordan Clarkson (team-leading 15.9 ppg) must shine here.

Note that Tulsa beat 6 ½-point underdog UTEP 59-48 back on January 11th when Clarkson shot just 3-of-8 from the field en route to a pedestrian 10-point game as the real keys to victory there were terrific free-throw shooting (see 14-of-17 charity stripe makes for the Tulsa team) and the fact the Golden Hurricane sported a break-the-game-open 15-3 scoring run late in the first half.

Maybe the Tulsa kids don't get all that much national attention these days but take notice that Doug Wojcik's club heads into play on this night only a half-game back of first-place Southern Miss (7-1 in C-USA play) in Conference USA action - it's on the tube at CBSC at 9 p.m. ET tonight.
