OUR OWN VERY SHORT LITTLE DO'S AND DON'T LIST FOR SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
By Jim Hurley:
Today is Thursday, February 2nd and here's what we're thinking about in regards to today's Jim Sez ...You cannot deny the fact that most of the recent Super Bowl games have been massively entertaining whether you think about the Super Bowl 43 last-minute 27-23 win by the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Arizona Cardinals in Tampa or the one 12 months prior when the New York Giants stunned the sports world with that 17-14 triumph over the 12-point favored New England Patriots or maybe you choose to go back a bit further in time and recall the back-to-back three-point Super Bowl wins by the Pats back in 2003 and 2004.
In any event, you get the idea here and that's we've been blessed as a football nation with some great "theatre" the past 10-or-more years but that wasn't always the case as most of the first 15-or-so Super Bowls were otherwise termed "Super Bores" - but that doesn't figure to be a problem this Super Sunday when the Giants and Pats meet again.
C'mon now, have you even come across a single guy/gal who believes this is gonna be a blowout (okay, we admit to having one good friend who thinks the Patriots will win by three TDs but, than again, he's the same dude who bragged on and on this year that he was the proud owner of a "win-it-all" ticket at 5-to-1 on the Green Bay Packers).
In fact, it's great to log everyone's prediction on the "big game" as various internet sites and newspapers love to print up the predictions by celebrities, politicians and athletes and we're reminded of Super Bowl XXXI between Green Bay and New England way back in the 1996 season when one-time NFL placekicker Fuad Reveiz predicted that the Packers would win that game 35-21 - a buddy of ours and yours truly scoffed at the forecast because Reveiz was picking the game "on the Las Vegas number" as the Packers were listed as 14-point favorites.
We mocked Reveiz and called him a fool - except he happened to predict the score right on the noggin': Green Bay 35, New England 21.
Our buddy and I never mocked anyone's Super Bowl pick again ... we didn't!
So that brings us to today's topic in our weekly Jim Sez "First-Person Account" story and that's compile a little list of Do's and Don'ts when it comes to Super Bowl XLVI and it goes something like this:
DO let everyone you know give you their in-depth opinions on what's gonna happen on Super Sunday - or haven't you realized that everyone wants their voice to be heard on the biggest sports event of the year? And please drop us a line if you happen to get the score prediction right on the head from one of your pals. We're bettin' it just doesn't happen.
DON'T tell anyone they "don't have a chance" in one of Super Bowl box pools: Sure, you can relate to spending a bob or two on one of those box pools and then coming away needing 5 and 9 as the last digits. Good luck, right. Well, back in Super Bowl XVII between the than-Los Angeles Raiders and the Washington Redskins (see January, 1984) we had the Raiders 8 and the Redskins 0 as our last digits in an office pool that had a good chunk of dough in it and we were not exactly encouraged beforehand but when all the dust settled on that clash there was the Raiders winning 38-9 and not 38-10 because of an otherwise "meaningless" PAT that was blocked by 6-foot-8 behemoth Don Hasselbeck who pawed away a Mark Moseley kick some 4:08 into the third quarter - now who knew that would sit with us forever and let us tell you we've never won a Super Bowl box pool, not than and not ever! ...
DON'T ignore those now famous "prop plays" as there is moolah to be made with these things and we've always found the key to be think how you believe this game will play out and than act accordingly. In other words, if you think the Giants will bust some big plays against this oft-wobbly Patriots secondary than maybe you wish to go "over" the yardage for NYG's longest pass play or perhaps you believe this game will have some red-zone stops and thus going "over" 3 or 3 ½ field goals is the way to fly.
DO take a flyer on one of the longshot prop plays because - and we've experienced this ourselves in recent years - sometimes that one single winner can net you a profit even if your side or totals play happens to lose. One item we're eyeballing as we draw nearer to Super Bowl 46 is to say "yes" that there will be a successful 2-point conversion play here (right now you can take + 400 on a $100 wager) and it helps matters here than both New England boss-man Bill Belichick and New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin have an awful lot of faith in respective QBs Tom Brady and Eli Manning making it happening on a two-point play and the score could well dictate going for a deuce anytime we get into the fourth quarter here.
So, there's some quick-hitter, personal Do's and Don't thoughts on Super Bowl XLVI. Tomorrow, don't miss out as we bring you on our in-depth Super Bowl Preview ... it's must-read stuff before we get to the biggest game of the year.
