COLLEGE FOOTBALL MID-WEEK REPORT
THE WEEKLY SPREAD UPDATE IS HERE PLUS THE THURSDAY NIGHT TV TILT BETWEEN NORTH CAROLINA AT VIRGINIA TECH AND MORE!!!
By Jim Hurley:
Let's face it ...There are a lot of College Football fans hoping/praying for utter chaos when it comes to who makes this year's BCS Championship Game but right now we'll tell you the only two teams that likely could create a mess:
The Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma Sooners.
It's no secret that the #1 LSU Tigers can't count their proverbial chickens just yet but this week's game at hapless Ole Miss should be a breeze and the day-after-Thanksgiving Day tilt against visiting Arkansas - while no gimme - is a home game with LSU in a revenge mode. So that leaves the likely SEC Championship Game showdown probably against Georgia.
And don't be so quick to think LSU's a "sure winner" in that one at the Georgia Dome.
Meanwhile, #2 Oklahoma State is in action Friday night at 26 ½-point underdog Iowa State and than that leaves the epic showdown against Oklahoma - a game that will be played on Dec. 3rd in Stillwater - and remember there is no Big 12 Championship Game this year and that's a major advantage for the Cowboys should they best the Sooners.
So, ask yourself this: Do you think either Georgia can beat LSU next month or that Oklahoma can topple Okie State? If either of those scenarios happen, than there's a free-for-all for the other spot in the BCS Championship. If both LSU and Oklahoma State loses, well, there's your chaos!

Note: College Football Betting Favorites are winning at a .484 rate thus far this 2011 campaign and check out the fact that we've had only 4 weeks where Favorites sported a better-than-.500 record, there's been 6 weeks where Betting Favs had a sub-.500 mark and 1 dead-even but vig-losing week right at season's start. Note that last week's mark of 26-28 basically mirrored the season-long winning percentage (.481) ... for College Football Betting Favorites, see?
THE THURSDAY NITE TV PREVIEW
Note the number below reflect the current BCS Standings:
NORTH CAROLINA (6-4, 2-4 ACC) at #8 VIRGINIA TECH (9-1, 5-1 ACC) - 8 p.m. ET, ESPN
The Virginia Tech Hokies may not be perfect - just remember that 23-3 home loss versus Clemson back on Oct. 1st - but they could wind up this here-and-now season with a fourth ACC championship within a five-year span and note Frank Beamer's bunch gets into another conference championship tilt with a win here and a Virginia loss at Florida State come Saturday.
Here, the 11-point home-favored Hokies - the ACC's Coastal Division leaders - will bank on a red-hot offense to carry the night as Tech's finished their last five games in a row with 400-plus offensive yards and that includes last Thursday's 476-yard output in a 37-26 win at Georgia tech.
No doubt getting-better-all-the-time QB Logan Thomas (two TD passes and one rushing score against the Yellow Jackets) was a front-and-center star along with RB David Wilson who busted loose for a career-best 175 rushing yards and remember that Wilson now has an FBS-leading 1,360 ground yards on the year.
Call it a pick-your-poison night for the visiting Tar Heels who have not played since getting blanked 13-0 by Tobacco Road rival N.C. State back on Nov. 5th. The Tar Heels - who had scored 38 and 49 in their two games prior to that whitewash loss - lost QB Bryn Renner (concussion) in that affair but interim head coach Everett Withers claims Renner is "doing fine" and should be good-to-go here.
If Carolina has any hopes of landing an outright upset KO blow here, than Renner - who has been sacked 22 times this season including 14 times in UNC's last five games - must avoid the negative plays and freshman RB Giovani Bernard (1,012 yards rushing and a 5.4 ypc average with 11 TDs) has to flip the field with some big runs ... or else!
Spread Notes - Virginia Tech is a money-burning 3-7 ATS (against the spread) despite last week's aforementioned 37-26 win at 2-point underdog Georgia Tech. Note that the VT Hokies have failed to cover 4-of-6 games in ACC play this year after having cranked out a 13-4 ATS mark in conference play the two previous seasons. On the flip side, North Carolina is just 4-6 against the odds this season and the Tar Heels failed to cover both of their games when placed in the underdog role (a 35-28 loss at 6 ½-point fav Georgia Tech and a 59-38 setback versus 9 ½-point favorite Clemson).

COLLEGE BASKETBALL MID-WEEK UPDATE
Okay, so maybe the folks at ESPN did go a tad overboard in their love fest for Duke hoops coach Mike Krzyzewski following his record-setting 903rd win on Tuesday night - the Blue Devils' hang-on-for-dear-life 74-69 non-cover win against 7-point underdog Michigan State at Madison Square Garden did feature the usual Duke staples such as solid three-point shooting (see 10-of-21 trifectas) and more made free throws than the other team attempted (see 30-of-41 FTs for the Dookies while "Sparty" shot just 13-of-18 from the charity stripe) - but it is an amazing feat to be the holder of the all-time wins record and now hear this:
Krzyzewski could march his way to 1,000 career wins sometime by the end of the 2013-14 season as the beat goes on for this ACC gang that has to be among the top five teams to contend for this 2011-12 national championship - go ahead and tell us why Duke won't be a major part of the March Madness mix this year as the infusion of more young talent (see G Austin Rivers) keeps the talented assembly line in motion for the Blue Devils.
If there's anything that's disturbing thus far regarding this particular Duke team - and keep in mind the Blue Devils are 3-0 - it's that they may not set each up as well as Coach K would like. Note only 8 assists in the win against Michigan State while Duke committed 15 turnovers and so that is something that must be tweaked plus let's see how this Duke bench develops. Even Krzyzewski claimed after this game that his guys "got tired" down the stretch when State chomped into what was once a 20-point deficit (61-41 with nine-plus minutes remaining).
Meanwhile, as #6 Duke raked in all the attention on Tuesday night, hope you didn't "sleep" on that Top 10 matchup between #8 Florida at #3 Ohio State:
The 9 ½-point favored Buckeyes didn't get the cash in that 81-74 SU (straight-up) win but did stay unbeaten at 2-0 as Thad Matta's crew survived a rotten 4-of-15 night from beyond the three-point arc - note that the Gators drained 11-of-22 triple tries - as G William Buford's 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists helped to carry the day.
The 'Eyes are one of those five or six really legit teams that can win it all this year and don't forget that on Nov. 29th it will be Ohio State hosting Duke as part of the now-annual ACC-Big 10 challenge. Good stuff - and another shot for Coach K to now get nearer to that 1,000th win mark.
