THE NFL PRESEASON WEEK 3 ROLLS ON
FRIDAY NITE TILTS AT INDIANAPOLIS & KANSAS CITY
(AND NFL BETTING FAVORITES CONTINUE
TO DOMINATE THE SUMMERTIME ACTION!)
Another night of NFL Preseason action – and yet another night to celebrate for the NFL Betting Favorites as Thursday night’s pointspread covers by 3-point favorite Cincinnati (a 24-13 winner against Carolina) and 7-point fav Philadelphia (a 24-14 winner against Cleveland) to go along with the “push” in Baltimore’s come-from-behind 34-31 win against 3-point underdog Washington means NFL chalk-eaters now are an electric 23-11-1 ATS (against the spread) through the first 35 pro football games this summer.
And don’t look now but that’s a sizzling-hot .676 winning rate for the NFL Betting Favorites – folks, we simply cannot remember the last time either the Favorites or the Dogs dominated the spread proceedings quite like this as recall we’ve told you a few times already this year that last summer NFL Betting Favorites finished the Preseason at 30-32-3 … and usually that’s more like it with one side or the other holding an ever-so-slim lead spreadwise.
Not this year. Not so far.
Well, these are two more games on tonight’s docket – that’s Green Bay at short-handed Indianapolis (and when will we see Colts QB Peyton Manning for the first time this 2011 season?) and also St. Louis at Kansas City and our Jim Sez quick-hitter Previews with Spread Notes are found below in today’s column plus don’t forget we’ll have more NFL Preseason Previews tomorrow including that Big Apple Battle between the New York Jets versus the New York Giants and remember that Saturday game has been moved up from a 7 p.m. kickoff to 2 p.m. because of Hurricane Irene.
Other NFL Preseason Week 3 games on Saturday night that are worth highlighting include Atlanta at Pittsburgh, New England at Detroit (on CBS) and Dallas at Minnesota as there are a grand total of 10 NFL Preseason Games on this final Saturday in August along with Sunday’s prime-time tilt between New Orleans at Oakland on NBC.
Got it all?

P.S., there’s a full slate on College Football Games set for Labor Day Weekend (that’s September 2nd-through-September 5th) including key out-of-conference games between Boise State-Georgia, Oregon-LSU and the Labor Day evening bout inside the ACC between Miami at Maryland..
Now, here’s what is on the NFL docket for Friday night:
GREEN BAY (1-1) at INDIANAPOLIS (0-2) – 8 p.m. ET, CBS
Now that word has filtered out that Indy Colts iron-man QB Peyton Manning (neck) likely won’t be ready for the start of this National Football League season, there’s a real mental state of despair going through town – sorry, but this week’s signing of ancient QB Kerry Collins didn’t exactly light a fire under the Colts fan base or couldn’t you tell!
Odds are here that the Colts – a whopping 8 ½-point underdog for this home game – won’t let any of their quarterbacks stand in there and get knocked around by Green Bay’s rather athletic defensive front seven here and so look for lots of rushes by second-string wannabes RBs Donald Brown and rookie Delone Carter (Syracuse) who could be central figures in this team’s attack when/if oft-injured RB Joseph Addai goes down this year.
One note on the Super Bowl champion Packers: Keep an eye on safeties Nick Collins (FS) and 22-year-old Morgan Burnett (SS) as they figure to be integral parts of DC Dom Capers’ defense this year and don’t be surprised if one – or both – pick off a QB Curtis Painter pass or two here.
Spread Notes – The Packers have split their first two Preseason wagers but note the lone spread loss came in a 27-17 setback in Preseason Week 1 play at 2 ½-point fav Cleveland. Meanwhile, the Indy Colts have failed to cover their first two Preseason tilts including a 33-10 loss at 6 ½-point favorite St. Louis followed by last Friday’s 16-3 home loss versus 6-point chalk-eater Washington. Last year the Colts failed to cover three of their four Preseason games including pointspread setbacks in Preseason Weeks 1, 2 and 3.
ST. LOUIS (2-0) at KANSAS CITY (0-2) – 8 p.m. ET
The St. Loo Rams may be unbeaten thus far in the summer of 2011 but the gang from this part of the “Show Me State” still feels they have something to prove – keep in mind these teams didn’t play their annual Preseason game against one another last year but the Chiefs did snag a 27-13 win as 3-point road dogs in a Week 15 regular-season affair that really helped to ruin the Rams’ season.
Now, head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s club has informed the media mob that veteran RB Steven Jackson will get more touches here to help him “get into a flow” plus there remains major position battles at many other spots including wide receiver where the likes of speedy Mardy Gilyard, Danario Alexander and rookie Austin Pettis (Boise State) all have eyes on getting more passes thrown their way by QB Sam Bradford. Expect the Rams to plaay Bradford for a half and maybe a series or two in the third quarter – all that’s to be determined by his health and well-being in the game’s first 30 minutes of play.
One note on the Chiefs: Head coach Todd Haley – who’s been reluctant to play his starters for many minutes so far in the Preseason – will play his starters at least a half here in this Governor’s Cup showdown at Arrowhead Stadium but don’t look for LB Brandon Siler who suffered a torn Achilles on the final play of Tuesday’s practice … ouch!
Spread Notes – The Rams have managed a spread split so far this summer with the aforementioned 23-point win against Indianapolis back on August 13th followed by last weekend’s 17-16 non-cover versus 3 ½-point pup Tennessee. Naturally, the KC Chiefs have lost both of their pointspread decisions with a 25-0 loss to 2-point road fav Tampa Bay followed by last Friday night’s 31-13 setback at 6 ½-point favorite Baltimore.
