Arroyo spins shutout, Reds down Padres San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Bronson Arroyo was masterful on Friday.
The 35-year-old righty tossed his first shutout of the season and the Cincinnati Reds blanked the San Diego Padres, 6-0, in the second installment of a four-game series at Petco Park.
Arroyo (4-5) allowed only four base runners on three singles and a walk and fanned eight to collect the win for the Reds, who snapped a three-game slide.
Ryan Hanigan and Todd Frazier ripped two-run home runs, Zack Cozart blasted a solo shot and Joey Votto contributed an RBI double in the victory.
Kip Wells (1-2) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six-plus innings to absorb the loss.
Chase Headley, Will Venable and Yasmani Grandal each had a hit for the Padres, who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.
Cincinnati struck first in their first at-bat when Cozart led off the game by crushing a fastball from Wells over the wall in left field to give the Reds a lead which they would not relinquish.
The Padres put together a threat in the fifth. Following a Grandal strike out, Yonder Alonso walked and Venable shot a hard grounder through the left side of the infield for a base hit, putting two runners on with one out.
Arroyo battled back, though, striking out Everth Cabrera before getting Wells to fly out weakly, keeping the Padres off the board.
"Tonight was another good pitching performance by Arroyo," Padres manager Bud Black said. "It was a variation of speeds on his breaking balls and the fastball just got us. We couldn't barrel anything up."
The Reds added to their lead in the seventh when Frazier started the inning with a walk and Hanigan got a hanging breaking ball from Wells and deposited it into the first row beyond the wall in left field to make it a 3-0 game.
Jay Bruce began the Cincinnati eighth with a double and, after a Ryan Ludwick ground out, Frazier ripped a breaking ball from Padres reliever Miles Mikolas in nearly the same spot as Hanigan's blast to extend the lead to 5-0.
Cincinnati capped the scoring with consecutive doubles by Drew Stubbs and Votto in the ninth.
Game Notes
Prior to the game, the Padres showed a video as a tribute to late bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds, who passed away from pancreatic cancer earlier in the year...Stubbs' double in the ninth snapped an 0-for-32 slump...It was the first shutout for Reds' pitching staff this season...Following Venable's single in the fifth, Arroyo retired the next 13 consecutive Padres hitters...It was Arroyo's fifth career shutout.
